Left with a free Saturday before their second round Scottish Cup home tie against Lowland League side Broxburn Athletic, the backroom staff have managed to entice 3rd Division Thorn Athletic to Beechwood for a friendly match. Thorn are currently top of their division with an unbeaten record in the league so far. Last week they surprised next week’s opponents Broxburn in the Challenge Cup when they only lost 3-1 in a tight run match.
No doubt the backroom staff will be using the match to hone some of the players who have been struggling with injuries and will be desperate to gather some game time. The Johnstone side won promotion to the third tier last season ending up as runners up to Glenvale.
A few weeks ago they pulled off a remarkable win in the West Cup by defeating Premier League, Benburb by 2-1 giving Thorn their biggest scalp to date and although this is a friendly match no doubt the Talbot will be wanting to slip up before a Scottish Cup tie.
If you’re at a loose end this Saturday pop along to Beechwood.
